Snow, ice and northern lights. These are probably the most common things people associate with Finland but there is so much more than that! Finland offers unforgettable experiences and activities 365 days of the year, not only in winter. We listed 5 reasons why you should travel to Lapland in summer. Take a look!

1. The magic of Midnight Sun

Did you know that the sun does not set under the horizon in Lapland during summer months? You can experience these nightless nights in the north of the Arctic Circle. No matter if it’s 3 PM or 3 AM, it’s bright all day and all night.

One of the most unforgettable ways to experience the magic of Midnight Sun is to try Midnight Sun Floating, where you can float in one of Finland’s thousands lakes gazing the sky, listening to the silence and just relax. This is something you should definitely give a try!

2. Take the best out of Finnish Nature

More than 70% of Finland’s land area is covered in forests. It means that there are multiple choices to explore the magnificent nature of Lapland with its flora and fauna.

You are warmly welcome to our guided Picnic Hike, where you’ll be in harmony with the arctic environment, reduce your stress and take a memory of Lapland back home with you. We’ll take a break by the campfire and enjoy the smells and sounds of nature.

Another great way to explore the nature is biking. There are plenty of wonderful tracks on Ounasvaara hill, located just a couple of steps outside the city centre. Take some sausages with you, there will always be a chance for grilling along the way!

3. Spend a Berry Nice Day

In Finland we have this thing called Everyman’s Rights and it means that everyone can access the wild and enjoy the nature for free. Get a taste of nordic flavours by picking berries and mushrooms by yourself! The most delicious berries, blueberries, lingonberries and our Lappish speciality, cloudberries, can be picked from mid-July to the end of September.

Even though everyone can pick berries, it can be difficult to find the best places. During our Berry Nice Day you’ll discover the secrets of these arctic superfoods and learn how to make juice out of them by the campfire.

If you are looking for a little adventure and would like to learn some arctic survival skills, we recommend our guided Arctic Survival -activity which is suitable for the whole family and offers you fun and quality time in the Finnish woods.

5. Events, culture, music… what would you like to do?

Even the smallest cities come alive in summer time and we Finns love to spend time outdoors. That is why there is a lot to do in both our locations, Rovaniemi and Ylläs.

Here are our favourites:

WHAT TO DO IN YLLÄS
Ylläs offers excellent circumstances for nature lovers and we recommend you to try canoeing, fishing, hiking in Pallas-Ylläs National Park or swimming in Lake Ylläs. There are also different kinds of events in Ylläs all year round, you’ll find them here!

WHAT TO DO IN ROVANIEMI
A sunny summer day means there are lots of people outside enjoying the warmth. If you’re visiting Rovaniemi in summer, go and have a picnic on the beach, have fun at Roiske water activities centre, visit Huima Activity Park, get amazed in a science centre and museum Arktikum or attend Simerock, a music festival in the beginning of August.

… how about meeting Santa Claus and his reindeer?

Even if you are coming to Finland in summer, there are lots of experiences you can have in Lapland.

Santa Claus Village is open daily and you’ll probably have a lot more space and time compared to winter, which for us is peak season with thousands of other tourists.

Join our Summer Delight: you will visit local reindeer and husky farms. But a holiday wouldn´t be se so without meeting the Santa himself! During this experience, we will visit Santa Claus Village with its various shops, Santa’s Post Office and of course, meet Santa Claus. You will also have the chance to cross the Arctic Circle – this is absolutely something you cannot miss!
